2010: A New Decade
As the sun sets on 2009 and rises on 2010, it more than just brings a year to a close, but an entire decade. Looking back, a lot of revelations about life, career, happiness and personal issues. I learned that if I apply myself I can do anything anywhere, in my career I bounced from being a Dot-Com startup guru to being a global deskside support rep to being a game developer to being an applications architect. I learned that I have some problems with addiction and dependency to substances and people and possessions and that I have a long way to go toward cutting myself free and learning to stand strong on my own legs. I've learned a lot about how to love and how not to love and especially how to let go. Towards the end of the decade I learned to become more introspective and look inward at all of the things I feared seeing about myself, started becoming aware of what I don't like about myself, and started to idealize about who I -want- to be as well. Lately I've started to explore science and philosophy and try to see the world through different eyes with a different attitude, and I like the direction it's moving me. Towards the new decade I intend to begin working on improving myself, my knowledge, my self-esteem and begin adapting to a new direction in life. I plan to get into my own house within the next year, both as an investment to the future and to have my own personal homestead in the world. I plan to go back to university to regain knowledge and become connected with the scientific community, because working toward my ideals as a Secular Humanist demands it. I plan to start edging my career more and more in one of the directions that align myself with where I want to be: science or simulation. I plan to get my arse in the gym more often to keep healthy, and work at improving my relationships with people around me while continuing to remove myself from the negatives and grow closer to the positive influences. I can do anything I apply myself to, and I am putting plans into motion. |

And even more Avatar...
Saw it again in 3D on Monday night with Skylos and Dhugal in a slightly bigger and more comfy theater down in Renton. Will be seeing it at the big IMAX in Seattle on Friday with Skylos, Dhugal and G'razel. I also picked up the PC game Monday night and installed it, haven't gotten to play much of it yet, but so far it seems pretty good. Some of the controls are slightly wonky, there are some camera angle issues (a lot of 3D games have those lately it seems) and it's a BEAST on performance - but with that said the rendering and detail of animations, physics, objects, weapons, etc. is just stunning. Obviously not nearly as good as the movie, but a better facsimile than I expected. Another neat little thing is that scattered throughout the game world are plants, animals, documents, research, items, etc. which you can scan to add to a "Pandorapedia" to learn more about the game world and history of Earth and the RDA, etc. The game is also littered with neat little side games like "Conquest" which can earn you bonus XP or effects during normal gameplay. There are also multi-player modes, but until I know some folks who also have the game I won't be able to explore those. Now I need a better computer, lol... =D |

It's better the second time around! =D At least it was for me. Second night in a row I've seen it in 3D. I will skip going to see it tomorrow, but I may very well see it again on Monday night. G'razel and Skylos and I are working out a time to all go see it at IMAX in Seattle in the next week too. Just an absolutely amazing film and I was gripping my seat just as hard this time as last time. I'm not sure I could see it enough to make it any less amazing when I watch it, the immersion is just stunning and awe-inspiring to me. |

All I can say is WOW... Damn this movie really connected with me on a deep level. Excellent story, amazingly immersive 3D and world design, compelling and heart-touching throughout. I know some other folks haven't liked it so much, but it just really clicked with me on a deep philosophical and emotional level. Definitely going to go back and see it again in the normal theater and hopefully also catch it on IMAX while it's still showing there. Whatta roller-coaster ride... |

Err, Moving RIGHT AFTER THIS
Sorry, I was going to post this in the same post as "Moving" but I forgot. So consider this my final post :) 1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before? -I took a huge risk: I started studying with a new (and amazing) voice teacher, but first I had to admit that the years of training I had undergone had left me with some serious vocal faults that I needed to correct immediately. It has been one of the most rewarding choices in my life. -I got my driver’s license and drove around in the snow for the first time! Terrifying at times, but definitely worthwhile. 2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? -I don’t make resolutions, I make plans. This year’s plans were sidetracked entirely because of things that were completely unforeseen and which lasted almost the whole year. But I am staying the course. 3. How will you be spending New Year's Eve? -We’ll be going to a NYE party hosted by some local objectivists- it’s bound to be fun! 4. Did anyone close to you die? -Not in my family, at least. 5. What countries did you visit? -Didn’t leave the country last year, but I plan on making up for that with my Superstar Tenor Tour De Force eventually. 6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009? -A work visa. 7. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? -February 17th. It was the day that derailed the whole year. 8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? -Singing a large chunk of the role of “Faust” with only five weeks to prepare. -Polishing and refining my vocal technique to a level heretofore unattained before. -Being invited to sing as a featured guest for “Arias@Avo’s” alongside Broadway baritone Douglas Webster. 9. What was your biggest failure? -Not getting cast as Tamino in Mozart’s “Die Zauberflote.” 10. Did you suffer illness or injury? -Not terribly so. Aside from a few sore throats here and there brought from colds, I have been relatively illness-free this year compared to others. Maybe my immune system is finally adjusting to the cold temperature? 11. What was the best thing you bought? -An iPod Touch, third generation, 32 Gigabytes off Ebay for only a hundred tollars, two hundred dollars less than retail price. In perfect condition. 12. Where did most of your money go? -School, food, voice lessons. 13. What song will always remind you of 2009? -“The Long And Winding Road” ~ the Beatles. 14. What do you wish you'd done more of? -Exercising. 15. What do you wish you'd done less of? - 16. What was your favorite TV program? -“Murder She Wrote” and “Maude” on DVD. 17. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? -Yes, a fellow tenor whom I have met at the summer festival at which I sing for two years in a row. He turned out to be not only a shallow-minded socialist, but also a very condescending one who dared to liken Asher to ‘a slave’. 18. What was the best book you read? -So many! “Geisha” by Lisa Dalby, “Objectively Speaking: Ayn Rand Interviewed,” Michael Ende’s “The Neverending Story” which I’ve re-read for the tenth time now, Italo Calvino’s “Invisible Cities” and Quee Nelson’s “The Slightest Philosophy.” 19. What was your greatest musical discovery? -Me, 20. What was your favorite film of this year? -1. Where the Wild Things Are. -2. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. -3.Fantastic Mr. Fox. -4. Julie/Julia (only for the Julia part) -5. Astroboy! 21. What did you do on your birthday? -I had to deal with a severe crisis, so I never celebrated it. 22. What kept you sane? -Reading “Philosophy: Who needs it?” 23. Who did you miss? -Heidi, the gorgeous soprano friend of mine who didn’t get to come this year to the summer festival. I miss you, babe! 24. Who was the best new person you met? -Angie, who was my Marguerite in “Faust” and someone whom I love a great deal! -Rachel, ANOTHER great soprano with whom I have become close friends. -Ali, Asher’s friend with whom we have started hanging out, she’s great! 25. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009: -Aequam memento rebus in arduis servare mentem: Remember when life's path is steep to keep your mind even 26. What things are you looking forward to in 2010? Conquering. |

I was tempted to delete that last post, almost out of embarrassment. But I haven't deleted a post yet, so I'm not gonna. I just want to assure folks (after someone gave me the Suicide Hotline number on Facebook I realized how much people can worry and how much they can care) that I'm fine. Really! Work can do a number on me, and it's been nothing but work for the past week. With one register in Music down on the busiest days of the year, it's been even more stressful. And I have my ups and downs like anyone. After playing Apples to Apples with my (slightly drunken) roommates and their friends, eating s'mores (thanks Mom & Dad) and getting a good night's sleep, I feel 100% better. Interestingly enough, the song I posted in the last entry is both coincidence - we'd just been watching Willy Wonka - and somewhat my own thoughts on the topic of depression. Not that I think I'm depressed, of course, but I've never been much for the concept of medication. For me it's remembering that what I have in life is great - health, friends, family, security and tons of love from all angles. And on top of that, the world is (still!) wide open for me and I've got the ability to do just about anything I want. For now, though, I'm gonna balance my checkbook, fold my laundry, and make some sausage balls for the potluck at work. We've only got a half day, though I'm putting in eight hours. Someone's gotta make that holiday pay! Tomorrow, gifts with friends and probably three movies in a row in the morning. I want to see Sherlock Holmes so bad. Current Mood: cheerful |

11 years ago, but still absolutely relevant. Opposition to Immigration is Un-American Monday, August 31, 1998 By: Robert W. Tracinski Restrictions on "H-1B" Visas Punish Ability and Trample the Rights of Employer and Employee Next month Congress will try to resolve a dispute with the White House over federal quotas for "H-1B" visas--a type of work permits for immigrants filling high-tech jobs. Pending legislation would expand the quotas by 10,000 to 20,000 annually for the next five years--still far less than the demand for such workers. President Clinton opposes the loosened standards, arguing that domestic workers should be trained for these high-tech jobs. In fact, both sides are wrong. Any restrictions on immigration--large or small--trample the rights of both employers and job-seeking immigrants. To make this issue clear, put yourself in the place of an employer who has just interviewed two job applicants. The first is hard-working, talented, and ambitious. He has gone through enormous effort to obtain an education and to acquire the skills necessary for this job. He received excellent grades in school and high praise from his previous employers. More important, he has shown the courage to leave his home, to travel thousands of miles, to learn a new language and an unfamiliar culture--all to pursue his chosen career and to work for a better life. The second applicant has no particular skills for the job you are offering; he expects you to train him. He never performed well in school. When his previous employer, in a different field, closed down, he did not try to acquire new talents or to move elsewhere to seek work. He expects new skills and a new job to be provided to him, with no need for any initiative on his part. Which applicant would you hire? Clearly, the first one, because he will be more productive for you. Hiring him would be an act of justice: It would reward the one who has worked harder to improve himself. Under our current immigration laws, however, you would be told that you cannot hire the first man and that you must hire the second--because the second is a native of this country and the first isn't. Wouldn't you consider this an intrusion on your right to choose the best worker for your company--and on the worker's right to take the best job he is offered? Wouldn't you consider it a crude injustice to punish a man of greater ability and initiative merely because he is not "one of us"? Yet this is precisely what America's immigration laws require. Defenders of those laws often argue that increased immigration is a drain on the American taxpayer, who will have to finance additional welfare payments. But this is just a smokescreen. If the anti-immigrationists truly oppose parasitism, why is it somehow more acceptable if the non-productive moocher is a native-born American than if he is an immigrant? And if welfare is the problem, why do they complain about highly skilled foreigners coming here specifically for the purpose of working? Perhaps, as Clinton maintains, domestic workers could be pulled off the streets and be trained to perform some of the high-tech jobs taken by H-1B immigrants--but why should they have to be? Why should employers be forced to chase workers who have not taken the initiative to acquire valuable skills on their own? And why should these jobs be refused to those who have taken that initiative? The irrational premise behind our nation's immigration laws is that a native-born American has a "right" to a particular job, not because he has earned it, but because he was born here. To this "right," the law sacrifices the employer's right to hire the best employees--and the immigrant's right to take a job that he deserves. To put it succinctly, initiative and productiveness are sacrificed to sloth and inertia. The "American dream" is essentially the freedom of each individual to rise as far as his abilities take him. The opponents of immigration, however, want to repudiate that vision by turning America into a privileged preserve for those who want the law to set aside jobs for them--jobs they cannot freely earn through their own efforts. The quotas on H-1B visas--along with all other visas--should not just be expanded; they should be eliminated. Any immigrant who wants to come to America in search of a better life should be let in--and any employer who wants to hire him should be free to do so. Anything less would be un-American. Robert W. Tracinski was a senior writer for the Ayn Rand Institute between 1997 and 2004. The Institute promotes Objectivism, the philosophy of Ayn Rand--author of Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. |

Tern are real good at the cookin's, emus not so much, once emus tried to make cooking thing and set the water on fire and went down hills from thar. So mostly emus just gets things in boxes and cans but not so much cans bekause is hard to open wit mah beek and last time I used the can opener I totally cut myself and stuffs. But tern is real good at kookin't can combine like five or more things at aa time and it turns into food, emu was pretty sure food was just comes out of cows or something like is what that milking thing is about likes you milks the cows for hamburgers and stuff, and poptarts and those microwave pizzas in pockets.... Oh oh emu has real good recipe what you do is get big back of cheese puffs like cheat ohs and then get jar of marshmallow creame that's already puffed and white and then okay this is triky part....open jar of creme, is real hard with no hands so has to do with mah feets, and then peel off stupid little tin cover over white sugar fluff, and then dip in cheese puffs and eats them. Is real good, emu likes it lots! Is emus own recipie! See now you know hows to cook like emus! For some reason tern is pretty sure that this isn't "food"....I mean marshmallows and cheese puffs comes from cows right? And cows make food so logic seems sound to emu... Heart Of Darkness, Heart Of Socialism: Ecuador On the 22nd of December of 2009 the television chain Teleamazonaswas closed down for three days due to a direct order from the Palace of Carondelet, the seat of president Rafael Correa- a self-avowed “Socialist Of The XXI Century.” The order given by the Superintendent Of Telecommunications violates all procedures and has been given without the option of appeal. The shutdown occurs at a key moment for President Correa: 5pm, only a few hours before the National Assembly prepares to debate about a new law known as Gag Order. At 7pm tonight hundreds of people could be found outside of the station in solidarity with Teleamazonas and against the measure, which attempts against the liberty of Ecuadoreans everywhere. For Marcos Cadena, one of the protesters, this is nothing more than a reflection of the totalitarian nature of today’s Ecuadorean government. Teleamazonas has set up a twitter feed athttp://twitter.com/teleamazonasec However, despite the hundreds of protesters, there a many who, likeVictor M. Abad (who is conveniently residing in New York and is therefore exempt from all suppression) , are in favor of totalitarianism and the violation of freedom of speech. Mr. Abad writes: “Para los ignorantes como Orlado Zuñiga, me pregunto hasta cuando los periódicos y radios van a hacer y decir lo que les plazca sin miedo a ser reprendidos o en el mejor de los casos sacados de circulación.” Translated, it reads: “For the ignorants such as Orlando Zuñiga, I wonder for how long will newspapers and radios be able to say and do whatever it pleases them without fear of being reprehended or, in the best of cases, taken out of circulation altogether.” To Mr. Abad we must ask: What kind of country do you wish you live in? You have two choices: a) A country in which the government has the right and force to censure and infringe upon the individual’s freedom of speech, in accordance with whatever it is the government deems ‘appropriate’ to be said. b) A free country. If it is a free country he wants, then Mr. Abad has to live with a very unpleasant fact of reality (for him): The fact that he will live in a country in which any person may say whatever stupidity comes forth from their mouths (Mr. Abad being a case in point) without the risk of government sanction (unless they are performing legal slander or libel, which is raising false accusations) for expressing themselves. If it is freedom that Mr. Abad wants, then there is only one path to it: Remove Rafael Correa from power and purge every cabinet, committee and office appointed by him, embrace capitalism and individual rights and restore a proper set of laws so that Ecuador is not a ‘Social Democracy’ but a full Republic. It is, however, the first kind of government that Mr. Abad wants. In this case we suggest to Mr. Abad to buy a one-way ticket to Iran, a country that is now famous around the world for having exactly the kind of government that he wants. Iran is so efficient in controlling everything by what the government deems ‘acceptable’ that some remarkable progress has been made in every aspect of Iranian life. For example, the government has banned makeup on female TV hosts, has banned those harbingers of sexual perversion known as curvaceous mannequins from store windows, has banned male clerks from selling women’s underwear, banned English words, and banned local and foreign media within Iran from covering things such as the brutal assassination of Neda Agha Soltani by government thugs – which is something the government would obviously find ‘inappropriate.’ Obviously Iran is the perfect choice for Mr. Abad: the full logical conclusion of his sickening ideology. There is more than a passing resemblance between Iranian totalitarianism and Ecuadorean Socialism. It is important that everybody realize that the kind of ideology that is now taking full bloom in Ecuador is the same totalitarian tyranny that drove Augusto Pinochet, Francisco Franco and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the ideological ‘giants’ (if one can be a giant in depravity) that Rafael Correa wishes to emulate. In the end it is valuable and intelligent individuals such as Neda Agha Soltani who are destroyed whilst government cronies and sympathizers, like Mr. Abad, feed on the carcasses. |
